^ Simple, regular sharing of everyday
moments keeps us close to those we
care for—no matter where we are.
^
tandingin an
airport line last
summer, 1 began
talking with the
woman next to me,
who turned out to be a longtime
B e tte r H o m e s a n d G ardens
reader
from Columbia, Tennessee.
What’s more, several months
earlier, slic’d sent me a letter I’d
replied to. Before long we were
chatting like old friends.
That would be a coincidence
anywhere—but even more so
because the line we shared was
a continent away in Sydney,
Australia, where I was visiting to
celebrate the 30th birthday of
B e tte r H o m e s a n d G ardens
there.
“It’s a small world,” the saying
goes. But on the flight home, I
was thinking:
T h a t’s n o t a lw a ys
th e case
,
is it?
My 7,500-mile flight
to the West ("oast lasted a full 14
hours. Here at home, I drive five
hours to see my nearest daughter,
or fly half a day to see others.
For anyone who has a far-flung
family, I’m sure you’ll agree: Until
someone invents a way to hug
your loved ones from hundreds
of miles away, our “small world”
can seem pretty big.
These days—for lots of
reasons—manv of us have to
work a little harder to stay
connected to family and friends.
I like knowing that
B e tte r H o m e s
a n d G ardens
is one of the things
that helps. Many of you tell me
that your sisters, moms, or
friends read us, too, and that you
love to compare notes on a recipe
you tried or an idea you saw.
Good for you. Just that simple,
regular sharing of everyday
moments helps keep us close to
those we care for, no matter where
we are in the world—or in life.
I
know you’ll find many
buzz-worthy ideas from this
issue, with its best-of-season
foods and ideas for autumn fun
in and around your home. And
one more thing we all share—the
right and opportunity to vote for
a new President on November 4.
See

for ways to make
your kids part of this process—
and read in the candidates’ own
words how their early-life
experiences shaped their
decision to enter public service.
